There are accounts of the Red Dragon, or "Y Draig Goch," being taken into battle by the Welsh against the Saxons in the 7th century. The Tudors later adopted the Red Dragon, and the Welsh-born future Henry VII took to the battle of Bosworth Field under the Red Dragon Standard. Looks like the Griffin.
