Louis XIV, known as the Sun King, imposed absolute rule on France and fought a series of wars trying to dominate Europe. His reign, from 1643 until 1715, was the longest in European history and marked by a great flowering of French culture. Louis was born in 1638, the son of King Louis XIII and Anne of Austria. When Louis XIII died in 1643, his son acceded to the throne, just before his fifth birthday.
